Oil's Nosedive
|
oilbarrel.com (05/19/2010)
"Here we go again. Or Do we? The WTI oil price has fallen to US$69/barrel—a decline of over US$11 in a week (though there is a widening premium of the Brent oil price to WTI). Is this the beginning of another 2008/09, when the WTI oil price went from a peak of US$147 in July 2008 to US$32 in February 2009? Ostensibly the present nosedive is due to a combination of geopolitical, climatic and industry factors. The simmering unease over Greece's debt mountain flared into a full-fledged national crisis. Then there is the Icelandic volcanic ash problem, which seems to go away but then keeps returning like a bad smell both literally and figuratively. Other factors include concerns over the UK's 'Hung Parliament' though government paralysis seemed to have been calmed, for the time being, by the establishment of a coalition government between the Conservative and Liberal Democratic parties. Last but not least is the BP oil spill in the Gulf. This spill could have long-term consequences for the oil market. California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger said on May 3 he no longer supported a plan to expand drilling off California's coast. The sharp drop in oil prices was matched by a selloff on global markets, which at one point saw the Dow Jones index around 9% intraday, with Asian and European stock also falling heavily. Will the oil price now go into free fall? Commentator KBC Energy Economics does not think so, saying in a recent weekly newsletter: 'We have been warning for months that the outlook for European oil demand growth is dire because economic growth there is so fragile, and it is the emerging nations led by China that are fueling oil demand growth. We continue to believe that this demand in the most-populated parts of the globe will support the oil price, but the Greek crisis has been a timely reminder that betting on the oil price is not a one-way street even if the market is now largely run by speculators.'" |
