Planned and Proposed New Nuclear Power Reactors Increase Worldwide

"...The uranium spot price is currently trading at US$60/lb (Trade Tech) back to levels traded in May, down from US$78/lb in January ‘08. The uranium price reached a high of US$138/lb (June ’07) before falling to US$75/lb (Oct ’07) and US$58/lb (June ’08).

Forward indicators (fund implied price) currently indicate an expectation for the uranium price to trade sideways in the range US$55-65/lb. In the past 3 months the fund implied price has ranged from US$50/lb to US$70/lb.

The industry average long term uranium price is US$80/lb, down from US$95/lb where it held firm for nearly 12 months from May ’07 to March ’08.

World planned and proposed nuclear power reactors

Planned and proposed new nuclear power reactors worldwide have increased in the past two years. From Jan ’07 to Aug ’08 there was an increase of 96 reactors from 222 reactors (Jan ‘07) to 318 reactors (Aug ‘08), a rise of 43% since Jan ‘07. This compares with 439 nuclear power reactors currently in operation and 36 under construction. A total of 60 new reactors are expected to be commissioned by 2014."
