OPEC Compliance Likely Needed Before New Oil Supply Cuts

Despite surging oil inventories, OPEC Secretary General Abdalla Salem El-Badri indicated he does not expect OPEC to make further cuts to output when they meet on May 28. Comment – El-Badri believes that compliance with 4.2 mmbopd in OPEC announced output cuts would have to reach 90% from 80% currently before they consider new cuts.

U.S. Rig Count

Baker Hughes announced that the number of active rigs in the U.S. declined last week by 20 to 955 rigs. Comments – Of the 955 active rigs, 202 and 742 were exploring for oil and gas, respectively, with 11 of the rigs deemed to be miscellaneous.
