President Barack Obama said on Tuesday that John Bryson, his nominee to be the new U.S. Commerce secretary, would work with the business community to promote economic growth and help open up new markets abroad.

"I am pleased to nominate John Bryson to be our nation's Secretary of Commerce, as he understands what it takes for America to succeed in a 21st century global economy," Obama said in a statement released before he formally announces his choice to replace Gary Locke in his cabinet.

John Bryson has a wealth of energy and environmental experience, heading a major power company for almost two decades and cofounding one of the country’s leading environmental groups.

Bryson served as CEO of Edison International, a California-based electric power generator, for 18 years. Edison International is the parent company of Southern California Edison, a major U.S. electric utility company.

Before that, Bryson spent years working on water and power issues in California, first as chairman of the California State Water Resources Control Board in the late 1970s and then as the head of the California Public Utilities Commission.
