Economic considerations and concerns for the environment force Russia to build its energy future on nuclear fission. Safety standards in this country's nuclear energy industry already are and will always be the most stringent in the world, Medvedev assures.
President Medvedev commented on Russia's nuclear energy needs Monday at a Kremlin ceremony to present state awards to 16 Russian veterans of the massive Soviet clean-up after the nuclear accident in Chernobyl 25 years ago on Tuesday.
He also announced plans to visit Chernobyl on the anniversary.
