"The $3.5 billion Taylorville Energy Center was originally rejected Tuesday, but supporters brought it back for a second vote."

It took two tries, but the state House is backing a clean-coal power plant in central Illinois.

The $3.5 billion Taylorville Energy Center was originally rejected Tuesday, but supporters brought it back for a second vote. They found enough support to send it to the Senate on a 63-50 vote.

Supporters say it will create 2,500 construction jobs and 150 permanent jobs. It's also supposed to support mining jobs by burning Illinois coal.

Nebraska-based Tenaska says its plant would convert coal to gas and store pollution underground.

Manufacturers and competing power generators are fighting the proposal, which they say would require large businesses to pay more for electricity.
