Their destination is the United States where Greg Barker, the climate change minister who is leading the mission, hopes they will be able to add British expertise to the green industry.

An enthusiastic Mr Barker said: "I am proud to be a cheerleader for Britain's green businesses and am in America this week flying the flag for those firms that are breaking into the U.S. market."

The six include RES Group, a renewable energy developer already well established in the U.S., where it has built around 15pc of wind energy capacity, and Adnams Southwold, which hopes to find new openings for East Green and its famed "zero carbon" beer.

Intelligent Energy, a global clean power systems outfit, has already impressed Boeing with its fuel cell system, while Mark Group, with 40 years in the insulation business and an operation in Philadelphia, is no stranger to the U.S.

Jupiter Asset Management and Willis Group Holdings make up a team which will meet business leaders, politicians, investors and regional development groups in Washington, Philadelphia, Charlotte and Columbia.
