More than 200 people gathering for an ocean energy conference in Maine's largest city are honoring Sen. Olympia Snowe as a "political pioneer."
Snowe was on hand Tuesday to welcome international leaders in renewable ocean energy development to Portland. She praised them for their efforts to harness offshore wind power and underwater tidal power.
She said ocean energy represents "a phenomenal opportunity for our state" and says the federal government must do its part by streamlining the permitting process.
Last year, Snowe introduced the Deepwater Wind Incentive Act, which was aimed at providing certainty for offshore wind technology investments.
